How can I prepare my daughter for YW Camp?

  • Speak positively about Young Women Camp. Your attitude will be her attitude. If she chooses to be positive and learn from her camp experiences she will grow tremendously as a person and as a disciple of Christ.

  • Go over the guidelines with your daughter so everyone is on the same page.

  • If your daughter isn’t physically active, it’s a good idea to have your daughter go on walks and start doing some exercise a few times a week, several weeks before camp. She will enjoy camp much better if she is used to some exercise.

  • Help your daughter prepare spiritually for camp. She will have the opportunity to do personal scripture study, personal prayer, group prayer, journal writing, and participating in spiritually uplifting activities.

  • Pack with your daughter. Use the list and make sure she has everything. Don’t pack the night before. Give yourselves a few days to purchase, borrow, or find certain items.

  • Talk to your daughter about inclusiveness. Some girls might be shy, lonely, homesick, or new to the stake. Talk to your daughter about how to make friends and include others who might be struggling or who are different than them. If your daughter is shy, talk to her about ways she can get to know others.

  • Prepare your daughter to sleep away from home, especially if this is your daughter’s first experience sleeping away from home. If you have any concerns about your daughter sleeping away from home, please discuss them in detail with your ward camp director so you can work out a solution prior to camp.

  • If your daughter is a light sleeper, have her bring earplugs, and or a battery-operated fan for cooling and white noise.

  • Talk to your daughter about what to do if she starts her period at camp.

  • If your daughter is more picky about food, make sure she brings snacks that she likes and that are filling and nutritious. Girls who are tired and have only been eating candy all week, don’t do well at camp.

  • Talk to your daughter about hydration. We will have plenty of water to drink but the girls need to drink it. Proper hydration will stave off many ailments, like heat exhaustion, headaches, fatigue, constipation and bloating. Make sure your daughter brings a sturdy reusable water bottle to camp so she can fill it up several times a day.

  • Prepare your daughter to be self-reliant. Teach her how to use her own first aid kit to take care of bug bites, cuts, scratches, and other minor health problems.
